3.5 stars, almost 4.I liked the book and I will certainly read the whole series. But the problem was that I kept compare the main character with other kick-ass sci-fi heroines like Torin Kerr from Valor's Choice or Devi from Fortune's Pawn... and she just wasn’t them. She is nice and not perfect, which makes Siranta very good Space Opera protagonist, but I think she lacks something. There is possibility that her POV being written in first person present time is to blame.
In my view it makes the plot a bit too slow, by spending too much time in her head. It also might be turning her personality a bit plain.
Her sobering up from being Corp superstar was a lovely touch. I liked her love interest; I liked the other guy too. Thought I don’t understand why there always have to be a love triangle. Mature relationships can possess enough tension to hold entire series. Also I think she fall in love too quickly… Not necessarily it’s a bad thing, but the book could
The idea of Grimspace was interesting, if not entirely unique. In overall the adventure was nice, even if I was a bit annoyed by Riddick rip-off at the beginning.
The reason I couldn't give the book 4 star review was the ending. I hated it.
After all the build up of the story the ending was too easy, too out of blue. Things just happened behind the scenes. Almost in dues as machine way of things. For me it sort of ruined the fun impression from the read. Well, at least the romance was nice.

Grimspace Sirantha Jax Book 1 Ann Aguirre Books Reviews
When you add together the MacHalo Girls (Some really cool chicks to read a book with) + Sirithura Jax (Anti-Heroine extraordinaire ) + Oh Captain My Captain March (the semi jerk hero, Um yes please, I think I love you) + Space Jumping (somewhat confusing but just go with it) + Off world clans and mad scientists you get something that equals FREAKING AWESOME
Let’s just say that Sirantha Jax is my kind of heroine. She doesn’t really whine or complain, she has compartments to shove all that useless crap in to deal with later. And she isn’t ready to save the world. Nope she is far more practical and self-serving than that. She talks smack, but she backs it up as well and what you see with her is what you get. Plus she isn’t some 20 year old twit, she is actually a woman in her thirties. It was bound to be love at first snark. She was SO MUCH FUN.
Just a few examples of why I enjoyed Jax
“I fall in behind March, not because I acknowledge his authority in any fashion but because if by some chance we were wrong, and there’s something big and ugly left in these wetlands, I really prefer it eats him first. Give me a chance to run.”
“From the first moment he entered my cell and caught me on the verge of tears, he’s seen more of that than probably any other living soul. It occurs to me that, for the sake of symmetry, I should probably kill him.”
“You’re a hex, lady, dark luck, powerful bad juju, ken?”
“Only to people who try to kidnap me,” I tell him sweetly, and March snorts, so I feel obliged to add, “Or rescue me…” And then Dina makes a pfft sound. “Or who travel with me…” My gaze sweeps around the darkened interior, trying to find an ally, but nobody will hold my eyes more than two seconds, it seems. “Fine, frag you all, I’m dark juju, bad luck, and you’re all doomed.”
Sirantha Jax lost everything when her ship crashed and she was the only one to walk away. Sure that she will be found responsible and executed everything look bleak. That is when March walked through her cell door and rescued her. Jax is a hot commodity and worth a lot to the right people as she is one of the oldest Jumpers around. She also seems to bring on trouble and disaster every time she turns around and a series of unfortunate events big on either hilarity or calamity.
This was just a fun ride full of action/adventure/space/romance (just enough but not too much)/science fiction and quirky crazy characters. I loved the shop full of misfits that reminded me slightly of the t.v. series Firefly. March definitely gave me a Malcolm Reynolds vibe and I totally loved it.
“I have to wonder what March said that garnered safe temporary passage. Knowing March, it may have been something like Don’t you want to see my face when you kill me?”
I was so happy with the relationship/romance build between March and Jax that I’m completely fine with the explanations of why they were able to become pretty in sync with each other quickly.
I also LOVE that there are other strong and snarky women in this story. Dina was so much fun, I loved her hard humor and how she is completely comfortable with who she is. The friendship that developed between her and Jax was so much fun and not your typical girlfriends type relationship, but it totally fit who the two characters were.
I’d recommend this for anyone who enjoyed Firefly, The Kate Daniels Series or just wants a fun story set in space.
After waking up the sole survivor of a horrific space shuttle crash, Sirantha Jax's external injuries don't take long to heal, but it is the pain of losing her pilot, her greatest lover and closest friend that crushes her spirit, and the Farwan Corporation's psychologist and the dream therapy isn't really helping at all. In fact, it seems to be making things worse, making her doubt her memories and making life harder to live.
Then March happens. Tall, dark and incredibly handsome, the ex-military-bat-shit-crazy-can't-stop-looking-at-him man breaks her out of the high security facility on a space station in the middle of nowhere and makes her jump his ship and crew to a backwards frontier planet so they can used her to teach others how to jump through Grimspace and therefore going against every law that says only sanctioned Farwan Corporation jumpers can navigate ships through grimspace.
That's right, Sirantha is a jumper. A carrier of a rare genetic gene that allows her to navigate through subspace while her pilot is her eyes and hands and directs the ship where she leads. But the relationship between jumper and pilot is the most intimate, as they end up in each others heads, hearts and lives as a result. And, well, March just doesn't seem like the kind of crazy that Sirantha needs after losing the only pilot she's ever had.
On a journey from despair and heart break, self loathing and post traumatic stress, Sirantha learns what is means to trust and love again, to dream massive dreams and to find something and someone worth living for again. But the transition from the galaxy’s most famous jumper to the galaxy's most wanted criminal isn't easy, especially when everyone is out to capture her for the bounty on her head, or kill her to silence her truths.
Sirantha is a kickarse, smart mouthed, sassy, strong female heroine with guts to boot. Determined to move beyond the pain and trauma caused by the fatal crash, she faces the memories and finds the courage to live again. Then March leads her on a journey through star systems that cause her to learn and grow in ways she never thought. Not only because learning things could save her life and those around her, but she finally starts to realise what it means to live outside of the Farwan Corporation and be something other than a glorified navigator. Sirantha Jax is finally learning what it means to be Sirantha Jax for the first time in her life.
Loved reading Grimspace, can definitely recommend it and the Sirantha Jax Series, especially if you love gritty, sci-fi, adventure and mystery.
5 out of 5 for Grimspace, and I'll review the other's in the series when I read them.
