First Light A D Chronicles Book 1 Bodie Thoene Brock Thoene Books
If you like historical fiction and want to learn about the personal lives of biblical characters that either have only a passing reference in the Bible (a nameless and blind beggar, for example) or are mostly written about in general terms (like the Roman centurions), as well as that of more well known persons (such as Herod Antipas), then this is the book for you. You will love The Thoene's engaging writing style, and by the end of the book you will have learned quite a bit about Jewish customs. Also, First Light has some great fighting scenes that make you feel like you were there in the middle of the action.Tags : Amazon.com: First Light (A. D. First Light A D Chronicles Book 1 Bodie Thoene Brock Thoene Books Reviews
This book and the series are fantastic! Very interesting and writing and research is done very well. I read the whole series from the library and decided I want them in my own library.
Beautifully written novel about life in Jerusalem in the last days is Jesus' ministry. Paints a stunning word picture of the struggles and triumphs of a blind boy, his sad neglectful parents, the religious authorities of the temple, the Roman and Herodian leaders and the followers of Jesus. THis is a great Christian fiction. Some minor missing words throughout was the only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars.
I love Brock and Bode Thoene's novels. I hadn't read one for quite a while and this was very good. I am a Christian and the novel elaborates on some of the stories in the Bible and builds the characters of some of the people. I loved Peniel and was glad he was the young man who was healed of his blindness. The parents seem to fit the way the Bible described them too. It shows God's healing power.
From the first book, First Light, to the final book in the series of the A.D. Chronicles, the reader is taken to a time that we only dream of.. to walk with the Lord as He fulfilled His ministry here on earth. From the first chapters I felt I had been transformed into the scriptures to actually see what happened during Jesus' time on earth.
In each book, I have enjoyed a much deeper understanding of why certain events occurred, why certain comments were made, and how politics, religion, prejudice, and despair under foreign rule created a world from which only God could bring redemption and love.
I recommend this set of books to anyone who wants to transport themselves into the period of our Lord as described through the eyes of the Thoenes. I will refer to these often in teaching, as well as in witnessing.
First Light takes us to Jerusalem when Yeshua (Jesus) walked on the earth working miracles and teaching The Word with authority. We can experience life as a blind man who understands The Light as it was in the beginning and to feel the joy of seeing Jesus face to face with new eyes Yeshua made out of clay.
This book is well written and more importantly, we see Jesus through the eyes of Jews and Romans as they try to grasp the assurance that He is The Messiah!
The Passover riot is dieing down. But the political turmoil is just heating up. Pilot and Herod Antipas want someone to blame. Centurion Marcus Longinus is caught in the cross fire and must carry out a mission to Alexandria to avoid being falsely accused. Meanwhile, Susanna is caught in a high stakes battle between brothers battling for her hand in marriage. And Manaen just wants his share of the inheritance. Blind beggar Peniel waits for the coming Messiah. Maybe he'll come this Pentecost.
While this may be the official start of the Thoenes' new series, it doesn't feel like it. The story starts moments after the end of their last novel, JERUSALEM'S HOPE, so it's best to read that book first. (Like that's a real chore.) After a brief update on Moshe in the prolog (set in 2002), they proceed to bring us back to the characters we've gotten to know in the first Century.
I love these books because of the background they bring. While combining familiar Bible stories together in novel form, they give a historic context that I enjoy getting. I also enjoy watching the workings and politics of the Roman Empire. My favorite character is probably Marcus because of his journey toward faith the more time he spends around Yeshua.
Unfortunately, this book didn't live up to the recent books the Thoenes have written. They sometimes got so caught up in explaining Jewish life and customs that they over do it. Some passages skirt across a fine line and come across as more preachy then expository. Finally, the non-Biblical climax seems rushed. They can do better then this.
Long time fans will relish another story from these masters of the craft. While not their best, it is still an entertaining read that will transport you to another place and time.
Go back in time to first century Jerusalem. It's a dark time in the world's holiest and most turbulent city. Walk with Peniel, the blind beggar who longs for rescue from his suffering. Peek into the lives of Susannah and Manaen, two lovers separated by overwhelming odds. And meet an unusual healer, who ignites a spark of controversy in the fire of hatred, deceit, and betrayal that is always burning in this ancient city. This first book is in the A.D. Chronicles series will bring you face to face with the man called Yeshua.
This is an excellent work of fiction based on Biblical truth and events!! In this book they make biblical history come to life in a way I have never read before.Yeshua of Nazareth was even a minor character in this book. I liked how the authors intertwined all three stories into one. Can't put them down, keep picking up the next one and continue reading.
